STUTTERER (New Yorker Screening Room)

It never feels nice to be the outsider, especially based off of things out of one’s control. STUTTER, a live-action short film, may be specific to that impediment, but it translates to any special need, mental health issue, or physical disability. The 13-minute movie highlights the struggles of living in a world built around abled-bodies, both in daily tasks and finding love. It follows Greenwood, a charming man who has a severe case of stuttering and a need for companionship. He feels broken until he begins an online relationship that makes him feel “normal” for once. However, when he learns that his crush, Ellie, is coming to town, he must make a decision to keep up this fantasy of normality or face her and accept who he is. The story takes audiences through unexpected turns and lessons of self-love in a harsh world, and it is definitely worth every minute! [Jade Michaels]

Instant Picks of the Week The West Wing

THE WEST WING (Netflix)

Once upon a time in this big ol’ land we call the United States of America, it was actually acceptable to love your country and be proud of it. Even if I am on the younger side, THE WEST WING creates a sense of patriotic nostalgia in me, nostalgia for a time when I lived in a country I could have at least some pride in. Not only that, it’s fascinating, even to a Midwestern libra who hates conflict, to see how the politics inside the White House function and the operations within the west wing. If you’re looking for a show to completely immerse yourself in, to learn a thing or two about, or to just feel a little long lost dignity, then THE WEST WING is the pick for you. [Emma Wine]
